Freedoms Price

Bodies raining down A nations heart ripped open Savage flames assail Tomorrows, lost in ashes The blade of hate has spoken The stain of 9/11 will be forever in our hearts. It was the day a vicious wound was inflicted on our nation. We staggered, but did not fall. We survived. We are America.

Color Coquelicot

Color Coquelicot Blazing Coquelicot paints famed Flanders Field Poppies on battle-scarred land. Honored too on coat lapels... war symbol of remembrance. Sandra M. Haight
~NA~ Premiere Contest: Kim's Color Splash Sponsor: Kim Rodrigues Judged: 07/14/2017 Rules: Write a Tanka or other brief poem using an unusual color choice along with a flower, plant, or tree Coquelicot, (coque·li·cot) originally another word for Poppy, and is the flower's orange tinted red color. Listen to pronunciation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5nR1X-QT1Y In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in war-torn fields to write a now famous poem called 'In Flanders Fields'. After the First World War, the poppy was adopted as a symbol of Remembrance.

Beside the last pew,
a chipped white collection plate.
A ghostly blessing
if you toss a modern coin

Year of the Goat

banners rise in street
each painted silk masterpiece
a celebration
of rich colors bleeding life
ancient spirits soar tonight

gentle goat once gray
brushed bold in crimson through time
draws fresh eyes and breath
a thousand years preserved
to graze upon ancient hill

Easter Lily

Easter lilies bloomed where His sweat fell to the ground hope of Christ's return a garden pure white life everlasting By Rhonda Johnson-Saunders *The Easter lily symbolizes purity, hope and life. Tradition has it that lilies were growing in the Garden of Gethsemane after Christ's crucifixion, and lilies bloomed where his sweat fell, the hope of everlasting life.

The Virtuous White Rose

--**--The Virtuous White Rose--**--

White rose is holy
Matrimony pureness of
Bond between lovers.
Blessing to Old Rome deceased’s
Chastity and innocence.

White Rose in myth and
Legend was tainted by blood,
Made blush from kiss, thus
Made it red and made it pink
Against its pride purity.

OUTSIDE-IN INSIDE-OUT, REBIRTH, EARTH'S TIME SHARES,

birth, creation, dark, death, earth, history, metaphor

OUTSIDE-IN---INSIDE OUT! © TANKA

Very green flushed carpets
Sky blue azure topped ceilings
Tree branched sofa chairs
Mirror sea rippling four walls
Windows and doors shut!

REBIRTH! © TANKA

Infant birthing new
Into mankind-likened modes
Start fresh from homed sights
Cultured to suckle blind
On natures ‘tested’ recollected notes
Left ‘one on one’ in thought sense!

Earth’s Time Shares © TANKA

Earth imploding ‘noted’
Fished from science scales to date
Attention everyone
Demise for man’s brutal act
Shrinks to pin-head size!

MARKED SPACES! © TANKA

Caterwauling winds
Float the once settled landfills
Forming 'blocks' of sand
Balanced on set place-mats
Dwindle down to nothings.

A LITTLE SALT PLEASE! © TANKA

Salt beds remain ‘still’
Air-dried salt mines reap
Sea tides, air-dried onto land
Leave the needed salt shares
Flavour 'salted' dressings over time
Enhance life’s food plate!

FORMIDABLE THOUGHT! © TANKA

Too many thoughts stockpile
Hanging words staged 'left'
Rehashed until spent
Sending 'mood-eating’ topics
To announce ‘inner’ moon ‘tides’!

work
SHARED AIMS! © TANKA

Unity bids man
Into work managed mindsets
Oiling the forces ‘toil’
Producing metal and brawn
Empires bleed open!

SET STRIDES © TANKA

Brain building 'strides' learnt
Leg and body builds in time
All in a heady breath count
Balanced events mate
Affecting lifespan!

---land of the mighty

land of the mighty
brought to their knees in surprise
warriors far from home
remember ancient war cries
and the pierced autumn sky

* Tanka is a long form which arose from the same literary tree as haiku
[no title, punctuation, or capitalization were used] as such,
it should have 31 onji sounds [which are much smaller than syllables]
so, less tha 31 syllables is preferrable.

It is a MOOD poem in which [unlike haiku] metaphor, personification, simile and
other poetic devises maybe used in a short/long/short/long/long format.

In Old London Town

In old London town,
I’d walk down foggy alleys
To take a photo.
Lawyer, prince, doctor - or what?
We’d see Jack the Ripper’s face.

Jewels From The Past-The Japanese Tanka Style

~Jewels From The Past~
(Double Japanese Tanka)

Nice Southern mansions
Beautiful places of long ago
If their walls could talk
They'd tell us more of what we
Already know of other times.

Many survived wars
While others never made it
Of that we are told
But many still stand proudly
Jewels from the past.

As Dust Settles

the sun is erased

   behind a cloud of despair-

     days froze to silence

dust stung eyes of the earth, flags

           escaped their closets...
