Where now a Butterfly Sits

In innocent lie
Amidst the lightening dew
Poppies in mourning
She unknown, taken at will
Where now a butterfly sits

No turning back

A Mothers Meditation

I taught her better.
I didn’t want this for her
She’s followed my tracks
Look at her, life is ruined
She knows not what she’s done

	The Daughters Disposition

	Wow, what did I do?
I can’t bear the pain she flaunts
	Her disappointment…
Stings… like a swift kick inside
What on earth was I thinking?

A Teen Dad’s Train of Thought

Did I? I didn’t!
It wouldn’t have felt as good…
She took the pill right?
What if, she was with other guys?
What do I tell my parents?

"Studies and surveys of young teen males show they are worried the pleasure
experienced during intercourse will diminish with the use of a condom."

Rock Climbing

My daughter and I Were rock climbing one morning We got up real high I reached the top of the rock And awaited my daughter Something went bad wrong Her rope came completely loose And she was falling I grabbed rope hard and tightly But she was slipping away I started to fall Caught myself nearly the end I heard a small voice Yelling up to me, pleading “Save yourself, just let me go”
And I had to…

On the Edge of a Dream

scent of virgin snow
bathing the night in silence
     my daughter’s footsteps
          echoing on dream’s frayed edge
a yearning heart constricting

I dedicate this to my daughter who is working and living in the UK. Snow scenes always remind me of her and I long to see and hold her again.

An Angels View

Looking down on me.
Wishing you could be here now.
Accepting your fate.
Appearing in every dream.
You realize that I'll be fine.

Paradise is a Baobab in Africa
where milk and honey flow beneath red -
I find her in clay, sun-baked, wearing

roots from the sacred tree:
the final piece of the jigsaw.

An Angel In Disguise

Always wearing white,
Who knew she was an angel?
Her friends had no clue,
But one day she flew away,
Higher than than the planes she flies.

We agreed on this
I stamp on your toe, slyly
You cannot feel it
Eyes on what you want the most
This is why you kept me home.

Blessed Daughter

My blessed daughter
She makes me so very proud
Her heart, a beauty
So large it holds so much love
And she gives it freely out

Bag of tricks contest sponsored by Linda-Marie
2 tankas 5/7/5/7/7
by Doris Culverhouse

Concealer covers
Restless nights, wrinkles and age
Spackle for the face
My bag of tricks will contain
Light and dark sticks for all flaws

Keep those telling flaws
closely covered never let
others see the real
superficial me later
Imperfections are pure

My father is dead

I kneel by gray winter seas

Fjords echo my rage

Grief swoops down from the heavens

Like hawks grabbing prey

Letting go

Grimacing faces
With teary-eyed composure
Look out together
At their capped and gowned daughter,
Happy, yet sad, both know why.

Gifts from Ava

Shallow finger bowl
shines blue in the kitchen sun
holding sacred gifts.
Once thought of as weeds, and pulled.
Now, floating flowers, treasured.
