The Sport of Fishing

They say that fishing is a sport,
but who wants to compete with a fish?
These small, slimy swimmers
often end up as someone's main dish.
The fish's pea sized brain
is usually fooled by store bought bait.
The only problem for the fisherman
is how long his patience must wait.
A fishing rod and decorated hook
lures the brainless victim to its death.
After its fins slap the human skin,
the fisherman brags with every breath.
A cold blooded fish's defeat
means little on the scoreboard of life.
If fishing is meant to be a sport,
why are the losers chopped up with a knife?

Making Sport of Human Nature

Ah, there’s a thorn in many a side
though not so grave a sin as some believe
due, I suspect, to excessive pride.
Poking fun at what we are show us,
I firmly believe, that we’re mature,
willing to accept ourselves as we are
in the diversity of our imperfections,
which, I admit, are many and trying
to others, so that we find ourselves crying
more often than laughing. Yet history
comes to our defense in that it proves
we are resilient, willing to endure
our stupidities, great and small, with levity
rather than bitterness. After all, we all
smell of the same humanity – it’s simply
a matter of degree and getting used to it.
And there is as yet no record that any
hog ever complained about another’s
stench, much less condemned him for it.
