You Can Never Return
You can never return
No, you can never return
You think that you can
But then you get burned
You were the darling, the gem, the hit of the class.
But when you return, they act like they think you’re an ass.
They are irritated that you left the small town and grew up.
You try to make peace, but there is no loving cup.
You can never return
No, you can never return
You think that you can
But then you get burned
You go see your grandparents
And they have changed oh so much
They ask you your name several times
You check out, staring hard at their hutch.
You can never return
No, you can never return
You think that you can
But then you get burned
You find the boy you used to flirt with
And you do your best to get his attention.
He stares at you as if you are a road-kill convention.
