Winter Buds
Buds live in winter in spite of the cold
brave little souls withstand ice, snow and frost
as they cling to tree branches in stark air.
When seasons change rain will bring them around
into a youthful renaissance called bloom.
Hold tight little buds in the crisp, sharp chill.
Dream of summer when you will be a leaf.
Pray that ice nor wind will break the promise,
nor a malicious hand reach to destroy
the embryonic efforts of a tree.
