Weightless, Penniless, Timeless Without Score Death had spoken thus; I see you still deny, Abides grim darkness in you, 'til bye the bye, Weightless, penniless, timeless without score Last gasp is endless, it echoes no more; Fields of waving grain, stroke whispering winds splashing murmurs of why human life ends As if such sounds could retrieve human life, And mortal coil could exist without strife, Would need of this my black hand ever be To release the horror resting in thee, Death then took leave, promising to return To gift me one last touch each man must earn! I watched its dancing shadow far away flee. Pondering what great evil rests within me. Robert J. Lindley, March 19th, 2015 Sonnet, ( A Late Night Conversation ) ( Words composed after reading Poe )

Facing mortality is a real awakening; we aren't born dark although, we do live in a dark world. We must collectively pursue the good, looking for it each day. Poe's work is often frightening but, without the dark, what would there be for the light to conquer? Thank God there is light. Well penned.

Susan my dear friend, thank you- your words and your judgment on my poetry is music to this old poet's ears. When long dark shadows cross my bow* I set pen to dance in a flash* I drink it like milk from a cow* Do so asking no gold or cash* For sweet rhyming sets me adrift* This old heart cries stain pages more* Good verse inked so true uplifts* Not writing, life would be a bore*

You've written a dour piece, Robert, but the language is appealing and leaves the reader pondering the same question. Well done.

Thank you my dear friend, for all your help and excellent advice given me. Your kindness as generous as is your fine poetic talent. If my verses cause the reader to stop and reflect on his/her life, then this creation sits well with me. The dark world-- is dark for a reason-- as in the evil that has been born in man.

Thank you my friend, truth is, once long ago in my youth, I wrote dozens of dark poems inspired by my reading and studying the fantastic works of Poe. This just happens to be a fairly recent one composed.
