Look at the tears in any mother's eyes,
cradling her child in her arms as it dies.
And feel the fear and guilt she feels inside,
knowing her child was at school when it died.
See a black man drop to his knees in pain
as the cops beat his son, yet again.
And feel the shame he is forced to endure,
to do nothing, or he'll get beat for sure.
Look at a beggar starving on the street,
labeled a parasite and a deadbeat.
And for a moment, step into his shoes,
accused of finagling coins to buy booze.
Any hopes for a normal life has gone,
he is often ridiculed and spat on.
And love is a feeling that haunts his dreams,
awakening nightmares of silent screams.
There's so much we chose not to see or feel,
convincing ourselves such things can't be real.
And this alternative reality
only lets us see what we want to see.
