Unhappy In This Strange Land
He is sad and confused.
At school where he is not the boss.
He wants to be home where he is in charge,
Not here, where he is not.
We have no issues at home
His mother says
Of course she does not have twenty-five other
Children there, vieing for her attention.
No one else shares his attention at home
Where he is a dictator, where he is in charge of his mother.
Much more difficult to be here.
Where he is not the king.
Not even a co-captain.
Not even a V.P.
Sad little 5-year-old wants to be home.
Screaming and running away,
Peeking around corners to see
If we are running after him,
With pure joy, like his mother
Does when he hides at home.
Unhappy in this strange land,
He never wants to come back.
Begins to harden his heart
Against the enemy, school.
