Unhappy In This Strange Land

He is sad and confused. At school where he is not the boss. He wants to be home where he is in charge, Not here, where he is not. We have no issues at home His mother says Of course she does not have twenty-five other Children there, vieing for her attention. No one else shares his attention at home Where he is a dictator, where he is in charge of his mother. Much more difficult to be here. Where he is not the king. Not even a co-captain. Not even a V.P. Sad little 5-year-old wants to be home. Screaming and running away, Peeking around corners to see If we are running after him, With pure joy, like his mother Does when he hides at home. Unhappy in this strange land, He never wants to come back. Begins to harden his heart Against the enemy, school.

I know this child well, Ilene, and he is so sad. We have rocked his world here, a foreign land and he does not understand at all.

A very perceptive write Caren and ,sadly, we have adults with similar issues because both parents and schools never helped them to deal with life's realities which is THE most important charge given to parents and pedagogues.

We know what they need, but they have to get it from their home. Like some of my best friends say as they sadly shake their heads "no home schooling".

Thank you. I am an elementary school counselor, so I do see things others might not.

Great poem, but sad... I've seen kids like this before, and the parents are so oblivious! It would help if they could just give the kids some warning that the rest of the world doesn't work like this (their home)... that there are actually "rules" that you have to follow once you leave the house! Even when they're reacting like little monsters, you have to sympathize a little because it's all quite a shock to them!

It is such a shock! We see five-year-olds who scream and wail and cry for months, because they want their own way. They actually expect it. Usually after winter break it begins all over again, and we have to bear through it.
