The Darkness There Inside

The moon hung low in darkened sky Like Robin’s Laugh Off* ball; Unless you saw him first perform, That won’t make sense at all. But seeing it just hanging there, I think of his demise, Of his descent into the dark, With sad and mournful cries. So odd that such a bright, bright light Could feel such gloom within, Affected so by gravity, To hasten his own end. How many whom we pass do wear A brave, courageous face While thinking in their heart they’ve made A lasting fall from grace? So, even when a friend seems well, Don’t take it all in stride; A hug, a kind word, may dispel The darkness there inside. ————— *Robin Williams at The Great American Laugh Off in 1977 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqD99S44VV8 at the 6:00 mark

A marvelous poem, Jeff. And so true. We never really know what is going on inside another person's inner being. The smile can be so deceptive. We recently experienced that again in the death of Naomi Judd. Who would have thought? So beautiful, so talented, so troubled.
