The Addiction of Poetry

I’m starting to think that poetry is an addiction: I mean, time after time I’ve sworn off—gone “Cold Turkey”! And then, Wham! At it again…. Certain, were it not poetry it would be painting or music—having the vain thought that something deep inside of me when uncorked will be a delightful fizz for myself and maybe someone else. Lord knows I’ve tried: contemplation! Meditation! Evacuation! and countless other “tions” but to no avail—coming to the conclusion that even if I hid all my blank pages and broke all my pencils somehow I would dislodge a fingernail from a quaking hand and drip-out a poem.

Thank you, SV; just a fun write. One has to be addicted...to produce both good or bad.

Like you, Jan, and so many other of us who post our poems here, I too am "addicted" to poetry, now going on over 20 years and seemingly never drying up! Why and How is this possible when most of us have other tasks and responsibilities? When not typing a poem I'm composing one in my head, and it can be anywhere! Thanks for the stop by, Joe, and keep writing. / M

Yes, you probably would. We have to write it down so that our brains will quit thinking about it. Thanks for the visit to my page. Sara

It definitely is an addiction I am proud to have Joe! Thankfully I rarely wake in the middle of the night and have to get a poem down but always have scraps of paper around for when inspiration hits. So glad you share the addiction, the only thing is costs is time and keeps the grey cells working too:-) hugs jan xx
