The Addiction of Poetry
I’m starting to think
that poetry is an addiction:
I mean, time after time
I’ve sworn off—gone
“Cold Turkey”!
And then, Wham!
At it again….
Certain, were it not poetry
it would be painting
or music—having the vain thought
that something deep inside of me
when uncorked
will be a delightful fizz
for myself
and maybe someone else.
Lord knows I’ve tried:
contemplation!
Meditation!
Evacuation!
and countless other “tions”
but to no avail—coming
to the conclusion that
even if I hid all my blank pages
and broke all my pencils
somehow I would dislodge
a fingernail
from a quaking hand
and drip-out a poem.
