Ten Years Gone

You sailed away on a shimmering sunset sea Leaving me alone with all the emotions, love, and pain For the first two years I called you my best friend For the next two years I called you my lover But never did I expect you'd be the love of my life The ghost of which has never stopped haunting me But you moved on so very quickly And you're happy without me in your life So why is it I cling to the past so much I still remember the day we first met You approached me in the high school cafeteria How innocent I was in my ignorance Not knowing you'd be all I thought about For the next ten years of my life We spent hours on the phone together And hours still in the classes we had We crafted collaborative fiction And shared music with one another I fell for you harder than anyone else And there were struggles aplenty Sometimes I wonder why I still love you But when I think back to all my memories It's because you were the best I ever had But your boat is long gone And I'm still standing here on the pier Hoping one day you'll come back
