Sunflowers

Sunflowers A depressing smile held my eyes She looks up at me, Offering me a single sunflower. "Mom said these flowers bring happiness," She says softly, "Like the sun they make people shine." True happiness is a gift passed on From one human to another I gently grabbed the offered flower. "It's not the flowers that bring happiness," He said softly. "The act of giving is what makes people shine." Amber eyes filled with surprise As she gazed at me, "I never really looked at it that way..." Tearing his eyes from the flower, He nodded gently. The world around him fell to pieces. With the final act from the living to the dying, He places the sunflower on her chest. She smiles sadly, tears snaking down her cheeks. "It's not the flowers that br-bring happiness," She stutters between tears. "The act of giving is what makes people shine."
