She Had Heard About Bears
Seven-year-old Dot had heard that bears were fast, oh my.
But when she saw them right behind them she thought she’d die.
They caught up with the child and swept her onto a back.
They raced each other to the middle of a well-worn shack.
We know you understand fire, one said and so,
We picked you up to show us what you know.
The little girl was not allowed around matches said Grandma Sow
But she could tell she had better break this rule right now.
She made them a nice fire, and they toasted up their salmon that day
As the wise, intelligent, brilliant girl quietly slipped outside and away.
