Self-Check

If you don't want to wait in line, (Impatience is a trait of mine) It's time to try (less pain-in-neck) The registers that say "Self-Check." You simply scan each item in And your adventure will begin As items roll along the belt So fast your ice cream will not melt! Whatever you've found on the shelf, Of course, you'll have to bag yourself. For smaller orders, it's a breeze; Just you alone you have to please. There is a downside to this, too. As cashiers go, now, just a few Will have their jobs once we accept, Despite our qualms, we're not inept.

Hey, you're so right … Why is it that we pump our own gas, but won't check out our own items? Do people miss the 'ritual' of the conversation with the supermarket check-out gal? -- Maybe in smaller cities and towns, but certainly not in Chicago … I think I'm the only customer at Jewel (Albertson's) superstore who knows any of the cashiers' or baggers' name --- let alone who makes small talk with them. Yup, you're right Ilene. Those gals are going the way of gas jockeys. ! gw

It makes me wonder about the cost ratio vs putting more cashiers on line. I guess they did their study, but life just seems to be getting less and less personal. Person to person anyway. :/ :)

Judy doesn't like the self check thing but I do. I must admit though more times than not, something will go wrong and you'll end up waiting for someone to come over and sort it out anyway. Still faster though I think! Thought provoking and well written poem!!

It's a double edged sword...the convenience factor and employment...I usually wait for the cashier.
