Heirloom events are often solemn occasions Weddings, high school or college graduations Grandfathers take sons or grandsons aside To bequeath his pocket watch with pride Slowly he'll raise the timepiece to his ear Pause and listen to the ticking gears He'll dangle the chain, click cover to open Reverently hold the beloved token Peering at crystal face with serious affects Both mentally count second hand’s ticks With nod of head, grandfather might relay Special words of wisdom in his own way I remember with fondness my own ceremony Granddad’s advice more valuable than money “Thing about time sure to help you through... Is be where you are whatever you do” Thanking my Granddad, we shook hands In hindsight I know I did not fully understand Years swiftly passed with many tick tocks Today I give my son Granddad’s pocket watch Original Written Jan. 17, 2016 Revised April 20, 2018 Early Childhood Memory Contest - By Line Gauthier - Any Rhyme Form - April 24, 2018 First Place

and the tradition gets handed down and down again. That is very nice, Susan. I am glad I was able to find this nostalgic tribute to your family back here in older poems.

Susan, how fortunate you were to have known your Grandad. I never had that pleasure, but I have extremely fond memories of my parents and the sage advice each of them passed on to me. Congratulations on you super win!

Brought a lump to my throat, evoking a sad reminder that I only knew my mums mum, a very brife 4 year olds memory. My other grandparents lost their lives in WWII. Hope your son felt as proud as you did way back when? Congratulations on your win Susan, Mick

What a lovely sentimental memory, Susan! Incidentally, I still possess my grandfather's pocket watch...of sentimental value, even if it does not work. Regards // paul

The solemnity and reverence are palpable, and serve as a "chain link" in time between the generations. I'd say "watch out" for this one in the contest! Eternal sentiments... :) gw
