If my mother says her pain is a ten, it is a hundred. On a scale of one to ten. She is a farm girl woman. Never complains about anything Taught early To be strong and stoic One of seven children Taught to keep her feelings to herself Taught to never complain So if she says her pain is a ten, please listen And help her. Okay, nurse?

This is such a brilliant write that many can relate to, Caren. Many of us either know of or have come across someone exactly like your mother--one who doesn't complain--one who keeps her feelings to herself. There is majesty in such a personality--and yes --we should listen, when she speaks.

My canadian grandmother was like that, gave birth to all her 11 children in her own bed! Had surgery only once in old age for removal of a small tumor in her abdomen. Died at 93 some years later. They were tougher in those days on the farm. / M

The pain measure - so imprecise and subjective but its the best medicine can do to date. She sounds like the island ladies I grew up with, not allowed to show pain especially at childbirth! :)
