Oh, oh Kakapo Magnificent New Zealand you are from Never had an enemy, Until the humans did come Bringing the ship's rats and the scary cats When the Europeans arrived You had no chance to survive Oh,oh Kakapo In your island country There were hundreds of thousands of you Committed to a small jail cell There now survives so very few. *Dedicated to one of the most amazing, and rarest birds in the world, the Kakapo from New Zealand. 62 are currently left in existence. Actually they do have a breeding program on a private island. I believe the numbers are up to over 100 now. I think the 62 reflects the wild Kakapo.

Saw the pic on your blog..It is truly a tragedy . Perhaps they can make a comeback like the California Condor..but it takes years and lots of $$$..BG

I am not familiar with this bird, so thank you for the info at the end of the poem. This was a wonderful tribute to an obviously almost extinct bird. Beautiful poem. So sad that they are confines to a small area.
