For those who are not familiar with the Australian outback, the Nullarbor Plain is a stretch of semi-arid land between the Great Victoria Desert and the Great Australian Bight. It’s an almost treeless plain of over a thousand kilometers between the states of South Australia and Western Australia. I had the pleasure of crossing the Nullarbor (on my own) back in October 1981 driving across to Perth in Western Australia to seek a new direction for my life. I stayed overnight at the Nullarbor Roadhouse watching the beautiful, red sunset over the dry treeless desert.

Another attempt at using Iambic Pentameter - feedback welcome.

POTD 24th August 2016

NULLARBOR

As darkness falls above the eastern skies,
with dawning shadows ending heartache’s woes.
Along the path wherein my future lies
behind the setting sun a light yet glows.
The barren earth divides a vast expanse
as shadows cast by dawn are left behind.
The glow of light in contrast to enhance
the darkness of my perished love unkind.
The sun sets over deserts reddish hues,
beyond the treeless plain, in hope I prance
with new direction my belief renews.
To west I head without a backward glance.

What lies ahead beyond the Nullarbor,
a dream of good to feel alive once more.

Simply beautiful ... message of hope cast in an ink bottle shaped heart, TG. Ty for the instructive template of the Iambic pentameter form. Laz-E-Boy me will try my hand at it again. A soul release sonnet of such emotional depth. Great write, my dear friend. Love and joy always.

Yes TJ, you have certainly mastered the English Sonnet form and more importantly in message as well, for without the heartfelt message you portray here, the form is lost in significance.

Thank you very much, Craig. I value your expert opinion. I do agree with you that even if the meter is right, a sonnet also requires content of significance. T.J

Hi Teppo, another excellent sonnet comes from your pen. I have never heard of the place you write of yet now i can see it through your words. Your descriptions are wonderful, as always. You paint your canvas with living words. I can so easily step inside the canvas and i am there. It is good to see that your sonnets still shine my friend. May your pen ever flow gold....Mike. This has to be a seven and a fave my friend.

Excellent meter in that iambic pentameter. If you struggled with it before, you have indeed vanquished the struggle with this well crafted poem. How neat that you traveled that great plain. It's nice to have this as part of your recollections.

It was a fabulous trip across the plain, although it was partly an escape from my past and a search for a new beginning. T.J

I love it when deserts are used as poetic licenses, your descriptions come alive in this piece and I felt almost there. This piece truly deserves the place it is right now.

Wonderful poem. My only nit is "what lies ahead." As I understand it that is the correct grammar even in the USA.

A truly lovely sonnet in which you combine the imagery with your personal life and feelings. I like the positive ending where you turn your back on the past while you look ahead with renewed belief. Well done with the Iambic Pentameter, and the metaphors. Also belated congrats on p.o.t.d.. Regards // paul
