Nature of the Heart
Poetry is a life-cherishing force. For poems are not words, after all, but fires for the cold, ropes let down to the lost, something as necessary as bread in the pockets of the hungry."
— Mary Oliver
It is the nature of a joyous thing
to fill the heart with a song to sing.
Then the spirit will take flight
with a new countenance so bright.
It is the nature of a thing sublime
to touch the heart with its own kind.
There's an overflow of insane glee
releasing emotions generously.
It is the nature of this life we live
unto the heart some sadness give,
experience to bring a little grief
however long, however brief.
It is the nature of the heart we have
to feel for others that may cross our path
and as each day breaks to a coming dawn,
it finds new mercies there to draw upon.
