My full first name is "Elizabeth Clare,"
As orthodox as any to be seen -
My mother's choice of Christian-name wear,
Dad would have preferred "Margaret Irene,"
(Named for a princess, but not for a queen).
My name has always been shortened to "Beth,"
Honouring that tragic young girl whose death
Was immortalised in a famous book,
Wherein an invalid draws her last breath,
That poor "Little Woman" whom life forsook.*

*The character of "Beth March' ("Little Women") was based on Louisa Alcott's younger sister, who did, in fact, die young.

I had never attached your name to Beth March, but this was the first time as a young reader I was involved in a heroine's sister's death - and it was shocking! So now whenever I see your name I shall think of Little Women!

Yes, certainly a tearjerker. I am somewhat less saintly than "Beth", not good enough to die young!
