Mummy-Gazing

I watched you as the sunbeams danced
like fairies on your butter cheek,
my heart was plied, my will was weak,
the clock-hands whirled - I gazed, entranced.

I watched as scary pirate tales
turned real in teetering cushion dens
as through your home-made eyeglass lens
you spied the Jolly Roger’s sails.

I watched you as new thoughts unfurled
and grew like magic beanstalks do.
As each became a part of you,
I thrilled at your expanding world.

I watched you concentrating on
your buttons - oh, a challenge fit
for any knight who’d rise to it!
You overcame. My heart was won.

I watched your earnest little face
tell tales, all sweetly mispronounced,
then watching stopped, as in you bounced...
head-first into my glad embrace.

Such a loving story, fell in love with the line 'sweetly mispronounced' - your little boy sounds like an imaginative fella!

He is! He is four and he still has all these massively cute ways of saying things like “sowwy Mummy, it was an axe-didn’t!” Ooh I could SQUISH him!

The buzz left while re-reading the poem and an intense emotion recalled how I'd decide to watch my toddler son for just a bit on Saturday before tackling ALL the to-do's. Hours went by while I was happily totally entranced in wonderment, joy and love such as none other. From clapping to looking for a tissue! What a poem - sure rocked my entirety!

Aw bless you! Glad I’m not the only starer! From the moment he was born George has suffered me staring! Interspersed with verbal outbursts such as “you’re so gorgeous”..! He told me the other day he thought he was going to get away with something. I asked why, he said ... “because I’m your beautiful baba”!

EXCELLENT - THUS THE CAPS AND CLAPS YOU CAN'T HEAR! Your talent can thrill me to the bone and give me an incredible high. Others here can, and do - and it is not constantly, but it is an exhilarating feel worthy of patience. After reading this, I wished for a cigarette and I don't smoke. Thank you, thank you - I am perfectly buzzed on the street where I live! (still feel 'rushes') Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Yes I used to roll my eyes every time the cushions got dragged off the sofa - now I’m just grateful if they do that and give me 5 minutes off being nagged to let them on the bloody PlayStation! Thank you Jan - glad you enjoyed!

I can feel the love in this, Nina. Your second stanza brought me back to when I homeschooled my kids and we did a unit study on pirates. I still have a picture somewhere of us dressed up as pirates with swords on the balcony. I enjoyed this poem very much!

Aw. He went through a stage a few months back where the sofa was constantly a pirate ship, the rug constantly the sea... I even brought him a treasure chest for his birthday! Cute. Thank you Carol!

Beautiful write, I especially loved that third stanza... (And don't worry, he'll be better tomorrow! He just felt the surplus of extra love and was trying to even things out!) ;D hahaha
