LOST HERO

He had always been her hero She his golden child The youngest and only girl of five children He was completely beguiled He loved and treated each equally A good man to them all He was kind ,loving and protective To them he was ten feet tall She loved him like no other A bond never to break He ….would always be her hero Her ….his treasured child of grace Now she sits in a chair opposite him Her eyes welled with tears Angrily he asks her “Who are you”? “What are you doing here”?

Hello Deb, It is sad when a parent is in that condition. It is hard when they do not remember who is speaking to them. Daarlenex

Am so torn. I am within inches, so to speak, of finding my oldest friend of almost 70 years. Hr was tucked away in a care home with dementia 3 years ago. I don’t think I could bear what your fine poem says. Thank you for helping me decide. Congrats on POTD

We understand physical illness, as everyone has aches and pains- something to deal with. It's heartbreaking, when someone we love slowly fades away, mentally. Your thoughts touch my heart deeply and make my eyes misty. I'm placing this in my favorites. Life is fragile and I cherish each moment. Congratulations Deb, on Poem of the Day. My best to you. Hugs, Brandy

What a poignant and beautifully written poem, Deb. I can relate to the feelings you expressed and experienced when my mother suffered from memory loss (not full-blown dementia). I never knew when I talked to her if she'd remember me or not. Over time I learned not to take her actions personally, remembering to focus on the heroine she was for me and was so even in her declining years and days. Congrats on Poem of the Day--well deserved, Sara Etgen-Baker

I can only hope and pray that my daughters view me in the way that you described him in that second stanza. I am kind, loving and protective and I do everything I can to be their hero. To appear ten feet tall. I love, love this write. It hits close to home for me. Well deserving of poem of the day. Props! Much love Asavvy1
