Linger Awhile, Sweet Summer

Listen to poem:
Why should one wish the days to pass Of lush and verdant meadow grass And butterflies with stained glass wings Which autumn's burnished hues outclass? A summer breeze revives the mind As worldly cares are left behind And gentle waves of lapping seas Coax weary bodies to unwind. Await the golden harvest grain But may lips linger once again On luscious strawberries' sweet delight; Resplendent fruit of summer's reign. Life's hourglass is finely planned Why hasten on the grains of sand? Let scented roses fill the air And summer's splendour take its stand. 03/10/18 The dog days endure contest : Sponsored by: Gregory R Barden N/A Second Chances N-A Poems From My Contests Only Part I Chantelle Anne Cooke September 2020

I'm happy to see this poem finishing high in the "Your Best Poem" contest, but am not at all surprised as it is an absolute delight. As summer is upon us today, I will cherish all the more 'butterflies with stained glass wings' and succulent strawberries, 'Resplendent fruit of summer's reign'. Such eloquence in 'Why hasten on the grains of sand'! Rhythm, rhyme, and flow are all exquisite. The addition of your very pleasant voice reading this gem provided an added dimension of enjoyment. A FAV!

Thank you so much for your kind comment,Connie. For some reason, this poem formed in my mind much more readily than most although it was autumn by the time I wrote it!
Date: 11/3/2018 3:31:00 PM
Perfect. This answers the challenge with precise meter and rhyme and captures the lingering wish for summer to stretch on. Your reference to “grains of sand” is a lesson to all who would wish away the hours. Best wishes. Deb
