In sultry July come wee things that fly
Up-and-down in a flickering display,
In fields and above they bid for bug love,
With the dazzle of flashing ballet ...
Night-after-night in their shimmering flight,
They're the envy of all other creatures,
For twilight is rife with nocturnal life,
But no other with such glowing features ...
They spin their bug waltz 'til daybreak's sun halts
All their frolic and fun a few hours,
Amidst the hot day they slumber away,
But return with the close of the flowers ...
Kings of romance with a penchant for dance,
Sweet glittering she-bugs will attest ...
Brightening terms into baby glow worms,
Is the blinking-bug thing they do best ...
This eve promenade puts forth a facade
That lightning bugs live "in the pink",
But their glows oft' reveal a bigger bug's meal,
So they may disappear ... IN A BLINK!
