It's In His Eyes
I see his gaze adrift
his eyes stray miles away
were I to guess
it wouldn’t be
a far stretch to think
he’s wondering
what’s next and
where this journey’s going
I ask what he’s thinking
and he makes up some phony line
I’m not buying it but I don’t mean to pry
the last thing he needs to hear
is some dumb platitude
I hope to be that good listener
so he’ll never hesitate
to share his deepest thoughts
those thoughts are all he has
to make sense of his predicament
on his journey that’s his own
I mean to be there by his side
when he’d like an usher
for company on this journey
I don't want him feeling stranded
I mean to help
and not deter
just want to
be there for him
hold his hand
should he want comfort
and let him
stand alone
when he needs
his space
we’re going thru this
together
but I get
that at times
the best I can do
is take a few steps back
