Listen to poem:
Sad goodbyes tear at my heart,
they sting, they hurt, cause me to lay awake
and think of you the whole night through.
Sad goodbyes choke me up,
leave me tongue-tied,
longing for what I might have said.
Sad goodbyes taste of melancholy,
they feel of ice and desolation as though
spiraling down toward a slow desolate death.
Their drama I can’t control
as sad goodbyes play havoc with my heart,
bruised and battered, die a thousand deaths.
Sad goodbyes magnify the silence of the night,
widening the gaping trench between us,
amplifying the void of the unsaid ‘I wish you’d stay’.
Yet something somewhere grows stronger with each hello.
