Hollow, Hollow Inside

Lay your head little one on my arm, let my heart comfort you; I will hold you until the very end, now fly away to Heaven; little cat of twenty years, fly. Just let go for its time for your sleep, no need to fight anymore; here is a lullaby for your journey, I will sing till the end and more; oh, such a soft sigh, now fly. How long did I cradle you to my heart, was it hours- till you were stone; I took you to your favorite spot, and sang till the birds twittered dawn; little cat I loved gone, gone. I am empty, hollow, hollow inside, oh, you took a piece of my heart; and now I have this awful emptiness, that only unconditional love can fill; and I am still singing, singing. ________________________ Added after contest judged December 12, 2018 Poetry/Free Verse/Hollow, Hollow Inside Copyright Protected, ID 18-1093-706-01 All Rights Reserved. Andrew, thank you for visiting my poem and for your compassion. You understand the pain,and that loss of unconditional love, these pets get right into our hearts and when they die we are shattered. I still have Snuggles Kitty who is adorable and loving but no cat will ever replace my old girl of 20 years Smudges. So sorry for the loss of your two cats, I understand the pain.

I had two cats, and lost them both. It's so hard. Your poem really captures the helplessness we all feel at seeing something so small and vulnerable suffer, and pass away. Beautiful. Thank You!

Pixie, thank you so much for visiting my poem and for your compassion. When I lost my old girl, Smudges, my heart shattered and will forever have a piece missing, she took part of me with her. Twenty years is a long time but I have Snuggles kitty and I adore her, a big fluff ball, that purrs and cuddles.
