Going Up North

Going Up North

Nothing beats the smell of earth after rain.
The petrichor from the concrete streets of Sydney.
Summer afternoon storms as I ride a train from Cronulla
my beach bag between my feet,
swaying by the hand-straps- crowded together-close
like tattered laundry on a clothesline

Next year at this time I’ll be far away -
playing Florence Nightingale in a training hospital
up North.
A million questions to ask?
Suddenly, down-to earth, dutiful, different.
A new life in which to navigate.
Destined for the drama of my own
existence
still grounded by the smell of rain.

Love this! The word 'petrichor' is not used hardly enough! You tell a tale inside a poem so well.

Ah, I can picture the beachbag in between your legs, feel the train under you, and the optimism as you think of your new life, training to help others. Wow! Well done indeed; I feel like I am you as I read this!

Dear Karen: I think at last I have broken my Muse’s strike. So happy you enjoyed my memories flowing back. I wrote this AND the poem below it, to the same exercise....two totally different poems in theme. I will share the exercise with you in a Soupmail. Hugs, SuZ
