From My Ashes

From my ashes I must say,
I have built a brighter day.
Phoenix spirit rises still
on the back of faith's free will.
I've had boils, bites and rashes
pain so bad it felt like lashes,
wallowed in the muck of mire
felt the lack from dead desire.
Eyes don’t flutter. Tears don’t flow.
The embers of my ashes burn aglow.
See my wings, golden in the sun.
Like the Phoenix, I've overcome.
I am of a people, sturdy stock,
born on the back of a prideful flock.
Push me down if you dare.
You’ll find yourself also there.
We have the power to rise above
the things that we are prisoner of.
Within us there’s the will to strive.
The Creator gave us to survive.
I’ve eaten my ashes and bitter tears.
Worn sackcloth around my scars for years.
The reward for rising, rising…. was great,
a shining, loving, enduring fate.
