For What I Pray
Sometimes I feel as if
I’m stuck in a bottomless cavern
of infinite blackness.
The hope of my youth,
which was boundless,
is endless no more.
My greatest desire
is simply to feel
whole -
the way I felt so many years ago
when possibilities seemed limitless
and the future was
a string of Christmas lights
shining and unbroken.
Today small miseries
seem everlasting.
How they goad me!
To an eternal God
I pray for answers -
for myself as well as
for others in the world.
I pray for more
than even
hope.
