After having taugh high school in a border town for 10+ years and talking with literally hundreds of people from the other side of the border, this is what they said they wanted.  I put it into poetic form, but it's their hopes and dreams.  It's how they see themselves as citizens of the United States.

Come out of the darkness, stand in the light. Speak from your heart and give us insight. Don’t treat us like animals lured by honey. Saying you care and you’ll give us your money. Offer instead, a small thread of hope, A plan to slow, illegal immigration, guns, dope. Shore up our borders, build a great wall, Help the murder and theft totals to fall. Give us a chance, a dream we can earn. The legal citizenship for which our hearts do yearn. Make America great, let us be a part. Workers can stay, would be a good start. Think of others, give up your greed. We’re just asking for the things that we need.

I agree with you Bill, people who want a better life for their children and themselves should go through the right channels when immigrating. Why cross in dangerous waters, or traverse land where savage animals roam and then arrive as an illegal, and fear every moment a policeman is in sight or have to live on a poor wage, because you are thankful you are still alive and dependent on your crooked employer, rubbish, this way one will not succeed. A soulful write my friend, hugs, Jenn.

Your poem touches my heart, dear friend, Bill because I was an immigrant myself. I remember when I legally immigrated to Canada where I worked, studied, became a Canadian citizen, taught, got married, and had children. I am grateful to Canada. My children and my sister and her children live still there. My poem " WE ARE BROTHERS II " written years ago, reflects your wonderful poem. Blessings.

I know many personally that have legally immigrated to this country or another country and obtained citizenship. It a great achievement. I admire anyone that goes through that process. Without it most of our ancesters would not have come here. Thanks for reading and commenting on my poetry, Demetrios. A poet friend in the making, Bill

So many world problems just makes one feel utterly hopeless. but not to fear. Bill Gates has it all figured out. That is another issue entirely which I am better off not discussing here! (love the message of your poem, Bill)

The dreamers, from what I understand are those who lived all their childhood here. they cannot be driven away, but let me play devil's advocate. i one time saw a video of representing world population with little round balls. The man showed how many balls represented people wanting freedom and help. What our country can sustain is less than ten or a hundred thousandth of all those little balls, each ball representing hundreds of people. visualizing the problem this way is mind blowing.

True Andrea, it is a world problem. Just like wealth is. The world has a distribution problem, not a resources problem. We also seem to have a lack of mindful leaders to create a workable solution. I think it may be beyond man's capabilities at this point. I was really speaking about what the people I personally know along the Texas border say they think about the situation over the last several years. Just opinions, not solid solutions. I hesitated to post this one but felt It needed to be said so I let it through. Thanks for commenting. Please don't think that I think I have the answers to global problems, I don't. Law and order. Most American love the freedom and ideals of America and want to welcome people to our country. We put laws in place and then the politicians ruin it by disobeying our own laws. And for those that need to change…conversation and moving forward. Not too many people leave their home doors open for everyone…wisdom.

I have met a one person from down in Mexico above Mexico City. He lived on a ranch with his parents and 19 brothers and sisters. He walked to the border because he was in charge of taking care of the animals and he hated the job that his father had given him. He had a brother or brothers who had already come to America, and they were to help him. He left this area and we lost touch. We have another family who lives here and owns a restaurant. Good work you have pinned about their plight. Sara

Pretty good job there, I'd say, Bill. And note that THEY want a wall. They don't want the flotsam drifting in either... Truth is, if we just flung our doors open, 1/2 the world would be waiting at our doorstep, even if with Socialist Joe and Komrade Kamala at the helm. :) gw

So true, I don't mind them coming for the opportunities here; there just has to be order to the process. Thanks for commenting gw. your friend, Bill

Bill, for the most part, I wholeheartedly agree with what you said in your poem. I'm not too much for building walls, however; would much rather build bridges. I always remember "The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein." I think I quoted that correctly. Maybe not! But I believe it. I don't know what that says about nationalism and sovereignty, but I suspect it says a lot.

I can agree with that, especially the quote. Right on there. I just want order instead of mob rule. There's room for a lot of improvement in our process, that's forsure. Your friend, Bill

Your poem is wonderful, and speaks for many. All anyone needs is a chance to realize their hopes and dreams, and to become productive members of society. We are all human beings, and that is greater than our differences. Happy holidays, Evelyn

Hello,Bill I agree with what you're saying. I get so angry with the politicians in Washington. They do nothing, and yet they still get back into the office. I see no chance of term limits. Blessing~Debra

Thanks for the comment Debra. I too, think term limits would help us keep a better focus on current situations. I'd also like to see bills that pertain to only one subject. I do not like all the add ons that make it hard to support or be against almost any bill completely. Your friend, Bill
