Darling, you dragged me in too deep

Darling, you dragged me in too deep
And abandoned me like an anchor in a lonely sea.
You shouldn't make promises that you can't keep.

I was doomed once suspicion began to creep
As it swam in your words that lacked in honesty.
Darling, you dragged me in too deep.

Please tell me, did you lose an inch of sleep
Making empty promises and cheating on me?
You shouldn't make promises that you can't keep.

I should've listened to doubt upon taking a leap,
Love should carry no doubt; certainty is key.
Darling, you dragged me in too deep,

This torturously lonely sea does weep
That you could ever reach such a cold degree.
You shouldn't make promises that you can't keep,

But apparently I'm a promise not worth keeping;
If you want to call this love, I'll say it can't be.
Darling, you dragged me in too deep,
You shouldn't make promises that you can't keep.

Anne, I must have seen all your poems by now since you have not posted new ones in a long time, but it's good to review them and remember what you wrote. I love the title you gave this and how you repeated it so effectively in your villanelle. Hope you put up some new poems soon.

Wow! The deepest trenches of betrayal. I hope this is a fictional piece. It saddens me to know that some people can be so devoid of compassion as to unleash such anguish on those they claim to care about . That said, your ability to take take the reader to that place is quite remarkable. If this is not fictional, please accept a virtual hug from across the states , I think it's a safe bet to say that real love will find you.

Dear Anne, the poem burns. many times I've been dragged in too deep. I like the form, this is a good villanelle poem.. "sad" at the most. Darlin, I know you will put them promises in their places. thanks for sharing your heart. Love~ SKAT ~

Anne - There was a poem you wrote that I meant to fav but now I don't see it...All I remember is that it's about an old house by the sea, the roof was leaking and it made a puddle on the floor?...Or am I getting you mixed up with someone else? - Tim

Villanelle is the perfect form for betrayal. Loved the way it flowed.
