Chicago, Long, Long Ago

Chicago.Long, long ago.a tribute.. Perfectly sweet, State Street. The Chicago Theater, beautiful to a fault. Going to Woolworth's for a twenty-cent chocolate  malt. No maniacs to fear. No people walking about with stenchy beer, Their gigantic boom boxes attacking  my ears. Mothers wore dresses, their lovely Daughters, too. Daddy wore a suit, his sons Very proudly, too. Marshall Fields stood, strong, silent and regal. Beautiful and strong like our glorious American Eagle! Streetcars clanged their charming bells, A time of innocence and elegance"  That unfortunately..fell! Panagiota Romios 2/11/2019

Wow! I remember it well... Seems unreal or perhaps surreal at this point. You would cry to see State and Madison today. It's 'occupied' by roving bands of crazies, thuggy-looking young people, and beggars. Scary stuff. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Panagiota! ~ Gershon

Hi Gershon. I was back on a visit in 1978. I came up the subway stairs and I thought I was in the bar scene from Star Wars. With those weird looking creatures. And speech, I did not comprehend. Sorry, it sounds far worse today. I did work at Fields in 1967 at Christmas. Oh, those Frango mints and the Joy of learning, that the customer is always right! I would not want to see Chicago downtown today. Glad you remember sane State Street! How blessed we were....Panagiota..Check your Soupmail. I sent you one two days ago.RSVP?-))

Oh, I knew I would hear from you! Your Facebook page has great photos of the Field Museum and others. Thank you for Posting those. Yes, it was decades ago. My entire schooling was in Chicago. Madonna de la Strada chapel is beautiful and on the campus of Loyola U, north side campus. Get to see it one day. Miss Chicago food? Thanks for visiting, Panagiota.

I used to live in Chicago, Panagiota. Apparently you have seen it in different decades, and you have penned her pride and demise well. Ha! A well-penned missive indeed!
