Bridge Over Troubled Water

My troubled waters ran deep. I could not sleep. My heart throbbed in awful pain. Then you were on the phone again. From Australia twice a day. Every day that fateful month. I hovered between life and death. How much worse could it get. Soothing, comforting sounds you made. Saying "Please don't be afraid." Loving me more than words could say. You build my bridge day by day. Blood is thick and you knew me well. I was close to the edge, you could tell. "Stay alive for my sake!" you begged. In that moment I was saved. Beautiful sister I owe my life to you. Now my troubles are so few. I crossed your bridge onto dry land. On that day you grabbed my hand.

Thank you Susan. My sister Teresa is as nurse like me. She was on duty when she first read the poem and rang me in floods of tears to thank me. Luckily, she has an office now.

Jean, it's nice to see your placement in John's contest. Way to turn a difficult situation into something that could be celebrated poetically. I hope your 2018 is going well so far. All my very best to you! :) Bartholomew

It is always a pleasure to make the winning list John. I also know my limitations so begin at the bottom of every list and make my way up, rather than vicea versa.

Thank YOU John. I had been trying for ages to put into words for my sister how precious she was to me that time. I emailed the poem on to her as soon as I posted it here. She was at work but rang me in tears to thank me.

My dearest Eve, there are all kinds of abuse that go unseen for years. I remember telling my husband that my sister was the only one who knew "the truth of him". Street angel, house devil as they say. I feel my spirt kindred with yours. It' a lovely feeling when you know someone understands.

This is wonderful Jean. A very personal poem shared to all. It is obvious how strong the bond is between you and your sister, expressed so well in your verse. High marks indeed.

My life has always been an open book Seosamh. I have used poetry to help me heal. If my words help others heal in any way, then all the better.

Like a lot of siblings, we fought and argued throughout our teenage years Ralph. The tide turned at twenty. Then she went off to live in Australia when she was twenty four. C'est la vie. Thank you for your lovely comment.

Thank you Dale. I had sent it to her in Australia just after I posted it here. She sent a text back to say she was at work with tears streaming down her face. That made two of us.

And she is and always will be Tim. More a mother to me than my own mother. Lovely to see you here this evening.
