At Last
winter at last has loosened its tenacious grip
this morning on the branch a bud of green-
by the garden gate a crocus gives a cheerful smile
and a brief shower has left the air soft and clean
daffodils planted in the fall are nodding by the walk
there are new signs of waking in the yellow rose
the Jays are back and scolding all the little birds-
near the porch sweet violets blush in their repose
I imagine I can hear the stirring of tiny creatures
slowly awakening from their secluded winter's nap-
the bugs and bees and caterpillars are on the move
and a busy woodpecker sounds his tap, tap, tap
spring flowers are promises that winter is at an end
and that our house bound blues will soon be on the mend
