I saw her footprints in the sand
No others at the beach just then
     Late afternoon, near April's end
A meeting that we hadn't planned

I'd come despite the stormy skies
Deciding on a whim to go
And just before the tidal flow
               To get some late-day exercise

I'd seen her car parked in the lot
          Nobody else around that day
The weather dismal, damp and gray
(A troubled feeling that I fought)

I hadn't planned to see her there
My heart beat faster thinking of
The luck of seeing my true love
               Perhaps surprise her unaware

I couldn't see far down the shore
Mist and fog being what they were
Still, I looked for signs of her
The bright red coat she always wore

Just one set of tracks that showed
          Going northward toward the rocks
Where we often sat for talks
Just below the Black Point Road

I finally saw the cliffs ahead
          Stretching up into the fog
     Down below, our favorite log
And on it lay her jacket, red

I felt there must be some mistake
          Because no footprints headed back
And here was just a single track
               That disappeared into the wake

I looked and looked for other signs
(Inside my heart, a horror burned)
But no, no other tracks returned
And then I saw the curious lines ...

On the beach she'd scratched a note
"Please forgive me" was all it said
I knew then where she'd gone, with dread
And sat to hug her favorite coat.

Gr8 write Greg, enclosed rhyme scheme reading with flow like a movie unfolding. Ur detailed imagery with landmarks, peppered with the emotional unravelling, made me feel I was there myself, even though noone wants to experience that knawing missing feeling of love lost. DRMF
