An Early Summer Saturday's Reflection
At last the summer’s here, I think for good!
And winter’s snow can stay where it belongs -
atop the mountains! In my neighborhood,
each night I hear our newest neighbors’ songs.
The birds that have been settling in since spring
and building nests inside our lovely trees
delight me, for I love to hear them sing
while I am sitting in the evening breeze.
I went behind my house this Saturday,
and there beside the chain link fence I found
a robin-redbreast, whose stiff body lay
where grass is getting yellow all around.
Oh, what cruel fate for one since early June
had sung for us beneath this summer’s moon!
