A Game of Thorns - Collaboration With Maurice Yvonne

i heard a...what do they say...a spine chilling scream ...is that the saying? a spine chilling scream followed by 'he's dead, my G_d he's dead' the phrase echoed inside the whole of me like tennis balls bouncing between two parallel walls i ran up aware i would be at the edge where the road ends and the gates of heaven stand saw a young man looked through the aperture of his existence looked and singed his eyelashes looked and could not see beyond now you know those beautiful fluffy white clouds the kind that feel like large teddy bears that want to hug you she had landed her very own- she cherished him knew who he was felt lucky they shared a mutual love i can't imagine the despair flowed through her when she saw him like that his doughy complexion screamed volumes breaking the thunderous silence he was a pale grey, blank, empty a sight impossible to process at odds with how one survives the experience of this tragedy she was lost in a dreamless mare [most of the time life its outcome depends on the flip of a coin if you don't know that you don't understand life his coin landed on its side ...all the kings men and all the kings horses...] her 'beautiful huge fluffy white cloud' had succumbed to the storm heart in throat hesitantly she touched him he was a frigid cold for a moment she saw her own smokey breath moving as if she was walking through the thick grains of unbearable pain thoughts racing she attempted to make sense of the senseless despair had grabbed her by the throat shook her around like so much thread and fabric she thought he might of seen life as futile society as a guise, as a failed paradigm thought he had reached the last motel on the road to nowhere and just...checked out depression the illness it's unlike any other pain when it peaks few if any survive it the afflicted instinctively self medicate but street drugs are mean she could easily empathize she too was him honestly she was tired of living in her sadness a life marinated in tears basted in blood the experience of having seen her partner lose his life to drugs and alcohol affected her profoundly experiencing his death was like getting hit over the head with a sledgehammer she'd never wash it off it clung to her like a pariah you can't wake up from reality and you can't sleep through it the tragedy had possessed her sensibilities it was a malignant truth she could not ratify singular in its nature unfathomable she'd been blindfolded and spun a ballerina on a high wire across the span of time spiralling down an infinite vortex one plus one is seven the ceiling isn't a celestial painting how many fingers a forty ounce of vodka opioids a hundred times stronger than heroin men in uniforms and and ...lost... what happened? less than two hours ago he could think- speak he had his very own persona now lying there as nothing it could have been her it could have be anyone but it wasn't it was- Him what did occur to her was the loss.

Boldly written and bravely breathtaking in it's existential dissection of tragedy, Carol. Seminal poem w/a profound message for coping and surviving the death of a loved one. Brilliant collab ... much love and respect to Armand and his daughter. May God comfort their hearts. Love and peace.

Yes, I recall what "Maurice" said a while back about his daughter's boyfriend. Very sad, Carol. By the way, you are not to mention names in the contest, so I want to warn you to take off Armand's pen name!!

Arthur, I wish there was a way to erase the pain that people have to deal with on a daily basis. I feel for people who suffer from depression and addiction. I believe what Armand mentioned below, most of us have been touched in one way or another by the tragedy of youth and addiction. Arthur thanks so much for commenting. I value your continued support. I am sure Armand will be pleased to read all of the positive feedback on this poem.

Hi Carol, one lives the reality as one reads this amazing write. This collaborative narrative you lay before us is an outstanding write. One can live the emotions. They play the heartstrings making such an emotional song. Sometimes one has to read the pain of others to feel. Sometimes there are no true words to show how an outstanding poem makes you feel. This is one of these times. I bow to the skill of you both as my sorrow flows. An outstanding collab. This is a 7 fave. Hugs....Mike. XX

Mike, I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Armand. This was such an important write for him. I believe with sharing life's experiences we may offer help to others. Unfortunately so many people these days are touched by the cruelty of drugs and addiction. Thank you for your touching comment. :)

The box to rate poems one to seven is gone. I wonder if it's a change or a glitch. I have experienced a few glitches recently. Hopefully they will be fixed soon. Just dropped in to see how our little colab was doing. Thank you everyone for all your kind comments. Carol is an amazing poet. I am so thankful we could get this important message up for all to read. I hope it helps.

Carol and Armand, This narrative is truly outstanding!! It certain captures the reader's attention. The following words came to mind as I read the text over and over: tragic, fascinating, powerful, emotional, heartfelt, and soulful. You both collaborated so very well in articulating this very complex narrative. "Addiction," and its consequences are so very terrible. Truly superb work by the both of you. All I can add is: SEVEN/FAVE absolutely!! Cheers and Best, Gary

What a heartfelt poem Armand and Carol. I write with tears as I know from Armand that the reality of the situation is it could have been his daughter and he has done everything possible to support his daughter battle her addictions. The hardest call I have ever had to make in my life was to my 20 year old son to tell his friends (brothers) had died from a drugs related incident - they weren't addicts just got drugs off the dark web:-( congrats to you both on tackling such a difficult subject:-) hugs Jan xx

It's the worst feeling ever to witness someone you love battle addiction. This was such a tragedy that will forever be engraved in their hearts. Jan, I am terribly sorry that you and your son have also suffered a huge loss. Thanks so much for your heartfelt comment. Armand is very grateful for you and the many friends he has on poetrysoup. Thank goodness this is a community that embraces writes that may indeed help someone else. Thank you from Armand and myself. :)

- Carol & Armand.... this is really to see "death in your eyes" ... reality is detected with fear and doubt - A wonderful co-write from you, a 7 - The opening of the poem makes you want to read on ... the end is powerful - A picture of reality for many people, and it makes me very sad - hugs // Anne-Lise :)

I tip my hat to Armand for allowing us a front row seat into the cruelty of depression and addiction. This disease can affect people you would never suspect. It can happen to the people we love the most in life. It is a subject that can't be swept away and ignored. So many families are finding themselves fighting this disease. It was a tragedy that Armand and is daughter will never forget. Thank you from Armand and myself. :)

This was absolutely incredible, I found myself lost within this poem, mesmerized by the scenes I was witnessing and feeling that sense of fear and nervousness that seem to accompany a situation like this. This was so cool, kind of controlled chaos, the word and phrase choices, the analogies, the metaphors, the entire poem engulfed me and held me captive to the end. The subject is a sad one and I am sure deeply affecting to many. A fantastic collaboration. Bravo to both poets.

Chris, This is indeed one of life's cruelties. To lose someone you love so tragically is beyond words. I am so very proud of Armand to have shared this tragedy in hopes that it may help someone. Addiction and depression is killing our loved ones. We need to raise some hell in order to get the governments to act now. Thank you for your wonderful comment. All the best from Armand and myself. :)

Tim, From your lips to gods ears. Hopefully if someone is in need that they have someone they can reach out to. One thing I have noticed is that this site has tremendous heart!! It's a very caring community. With heart and kindness so much can be accomplished. My wish is that those suffering reach out for support. Armand is a beacon of all that is kind. His generosity of spirit and love for all is evident in sharing this personal tragedy. Thank you for your comment. Carol & Armand :)

It was a great experience working with you on this piece. Obviously I was so close to the subject matter that it was a difficult write for me. Your contribution in writing as well as editing this poem is immeasurable. I felt it was important to get it on the board that it might help others who have had similar experiences. I think most of us have been touched in one way or another by the tragedy of youth and the effects of drug addiction. Lots Of Love Always, armand.
