A Fun Poem

I looked at it just lying there, So dejected and exceedingly bare. It needed a hand after lying in sand, So I rubbed it to make it look grand. I applied some oil after shifting the spoil, Soon it was starting to look quite good, Like in the old days when I remember it stood, So proud and long for all to see, Now it just rested upon my knee. With oil and a smile, I rubbed it up and down, Folk walked past giving me the odd frown. After my handiwork It showed signs of respect. Soon it was ready , looking so proud and erect, With a liberal dose of oil to the end I anointed, As it was to about to enter the hole it was pointed. It slipped in to full depth as I gasped with delight, At the flagpole now gleaming, a wonderful sight. © Dave Timperley 31 July 2016.
