Lost, to the darkness, deep ...

This bleak sojourn I have made
Times on end, dipping my eyes
To the dreadful forms that mock
Me, a maelstrom of words spinning
In my mind, to pinch the oppressive

Stench of this place. You have
Beckoned me, ages hence, howling
And shrieking 'til the discordant
Consequence I could refuse no more.
Hope, they call you? Oh, such a

Horrid and cruel parody! Do you
See in me a fool, then? A jaded
Harlequin? A multitude of monikers
Be yours, but THAT is the most
Absurd, and I shall not speak it!

Have you not known me in all the
Scratchings of dread and despair ...
In that stark honesty? You are the
Bastard of my passions, and you
Have worn this flesh as your own ...

Oh, how long I have watched from
The depths of sorrow while you
Dance in my form, somber moon
Cackling like a demon ... oh, how
You draw the very spirit from my

Trembling bones, my marrow sucked
Like pulpy food for your pleasure.
Such exquisite agony! Such divine
Misery, mine! Keen and carnal truth
Scrapes raw the depths of my spirit

With grisly intention, the blood of
My good and kind heart, stirred up
And imbibed as your remedy, and
The clotted matter spit in my face
With magnificent madness. Alas,

Dear Oblivion, the ebon sky now
Weeps - stars streaking earthward
Like ragged rain, till the heavens
Are as The Torment - lightless,
Devoid, barren, bloody. Thus, the

Last breath of a saint becomes the
First breath of a monster, and in
Feigning prescience of an answer
That will never come, I ask of you,
"Hope", in utter terror and awe ...

Why? Why do you taunt me so?!?

Thanks, Charlie, glad you enjoyed this one! It actually is about the dichotomy of hope whilst amidst the throes of addiction and depression, and how it can produce very unrealistic expectations, (though I believe it ultimately is salvation).

(continued) I often write with a lot of ambiguity and hidden meaning, though, and I love to see how folks interpret these deeper, less "clear" pieces. Poetry says something different to each of us, I think! Thanks again! :-)

Gregory, this is a stunning piece of dark verse. I often lose interest in blank verse but this one pulled me along in fascination. Your combination of imagery and words give that impression of all good art - that of being uncovered rather than made; and the message strikes a powerful chord.

My goodness, what an amazing entry for In the Dark!! How ever did you come up with this idea and all the incredible imagery. Not being a free verse person, I know I can't measure up to this one!!!

I'm a bit too "complex" for my own good, Andrea, and too much time in dark places, self-imposed ... I guess that translates well to these shadowy realms, lol. And please don't say you can't measure up! You are an EXQUISITE writer, and I've yet to read ANYthing of yours that couldn't win ANY contest! We are all chasing you, my friend, and the extraordinarily high and refined bar you set keeps us striving to do our best - what a blessing that is, and what a treasure you are -

I am better because of you, (and the other amazing writers here), and while I'll never reach that level, it helps me to expect more of my own work. Thank you so much, my friend! <3

Thanks, John ... we'll see. Too many great poets here for me to ever count on such, and so many better than I. Some that I thought were my best that never even placed - God keeps us humble. I try to keep mySELF humble, cuz God's usually a bit more ruthless about it, lol! Blessings, Brother. :-)
