Finding the Real Me
I spent my childhood playing lots of softball. It was one of the many things I was good at. I played other sports, but I didn’t like them at all. I felt most at home on the field with a glove and a bat. As I got older, softball became my main focus. I lived it, breathed it, and even dreamed it every day. My friends and I were all aware what softball meant to us. I always wondered what I’d do if I couldn’t play. I was good enough to play softball in college, And thus began what I thought would be a great career. But the game ruled my life, and I always felt on edge. “Who was I without softball?” was the question I’d fear. During a game, I had a horrible injury. My worst nightmare had now become a reality. Very few ever come back after knee surgery. My career was over and I felt I had no identity. It’s been years, and I still haven’t gotten over it, But I have moved on and done many other things. I recently met someone who opened my eyes a bit. He said, “You never know what open doors life can bring.” He told me who I was wasn’t only on the outside, But also how I saw myself in my heart and mind. He said my real identity is on the inside, And what’s important to others is what I leave behind.
