My Only One
“My Only One” He watched from the window as she worked out in the yard. His lips formed to a smile she always worked so hard. It seemed not so long ago she was out there planting seeds. But days like years move forward now she's out there pulling weeds. He longs to go out to her and help her with her chores. But those days are far behind him for now he walks through doors. He hears her as she comes back in from her day out in the sun. She picks up his picture and says “Hows my only one?” He recalls when it happened the day her true love died. He lost control in the blinding snow trying to get here by her side. There was talk among her family that she would lose her mind. And that's when he decided that he would stay behind. Her friends don't come around no more they say she isn't right. She walks through their tiny home and talks to him at night. Then she sits and holds his picture and stares out at the moon. Vowing her undying love, they will be together soon. He longs to kiss and hold her, he knows she knows he's there. He wants to reach out to her but he knows that he don't dare. So the man whose in the picture is the man that has her heart. Forever now together. But for now still far apart. He stands quiet across the room as she makes her way to bed. Then whispers to her darling it's time to rest your pretty head. It seems almost unfair to me. How the two that loved the most. Could be stuck here in this moment a woman and a ghost. Edwin C Hofert
