I’m watching all the people Driving down that highway. They’re all heading somewhere else While I am here to stay. I can feel that highway calling me But that’s something I must hide For I’ve got responsibilities So, I go back inside. In the afternoon I sit at work. My desk holds me down And I stare out the window, there When no one is around. Out there is that highway Heading toward the sky And I sit in my office Just wishing I could fly. I can feel that highway calling me But I’ve yet to be paid And I’ve got responsibilities So, I stand and close the shade. I’ve got responsibilities: kids and bills and such And a little lady I once loved too much. I’ve got responsibilities: things I can’t put off So, I keep doing what I can and hope that it’s enough. Dinner’s done, the dishes washed And night has filled the room. The kids have all been put to bed And I sit in the gloom. I hear my lady calling me To come and go to sleep I think about that highway And fight the urge to weep. I can feel that highway calling me And freedom fills my head But I’ve got responsibilities So, I just go to bed.
