A Vast Confusion

 Long long I lay in the sands

Sounds of trains in the surf
in subways of the sea
And an even greater undersound
of a vast confusion in the universe
a rumbling and a roaring
as of some enormous creature turning
under sea and earth
a billion sotto voices murmuring
a vast muttering
a swelling stuttering
in ocean's speakers
world's voice-box heard with ear to sand
a shocked echoing
a shocking shouting
of all life's voices lost in night
And the tape of it
someow running backwards now
through the Moog Synthesizer of time
Chaos unscrambled
back to the first
harmonies
And the first light

To a foil'd European Revolutionaire

COURAGE yet! my brother or my sister! 
Keep on! Liberty is to be subserv’d, whatever occurs; 
That is nothing, that is quell’d by one or two failures, or any number of failures, 
Or by the indifference or ingratitude of the people, or by any unfaithfulness, 
Or the show of the tushes of power, soldiers, cannon, penal statutes.

Revolt! and still revolt! revolt! 
What we believe in waits latent forever through all the continents, and all the islands
 and
 archipelagos of the sea; 
What we believe in invites no one, promises nothing, sits in calmness and light, is
 positive
 and composed, knows no discouragement, 
Waiting patiently, waiting its time. 

(Not songs of loyalty alone are these,
But songs of insurrection also; 
For I am the sworn poet of every dauntless rebel, the world over, 
And he going with me leaves peace and routine behind him, 
And stakes his life, to be lost at any moment.)

Revolt! and the downfall of tyrants!
The battle rages with many a loud alarm, and frequent advance and retreat, 
The infidel triumphs—or supposes he triumphs, 
Then the prison, scaffold, garrote, hand-cuffs, iron necklace and anklet, lead-balls, do
 their
 work, 
The named and unnamed heroes pass to other spheres, 
The great speakers and writers are exiled—they lie sick in distant lands,
The cause is asleep—the strongest throats are still, choked with their own blood, 
The young men droop their eyelashes toward the ground when they meet; 
—But for all this, liberty has not gone out of the place, nor the infidel
 enter’d
 into full possession. 

When liberty goes out of a place, it is not the first to go, nor the second or third to
 go, 
It waits for all the rest to go—it is the last.

When there are no more memories of heroes and martyrs, 
And when all life, and all the souls of men and women are discharged from any part of the
 earth, 
Then only shall liberty, or the idea of liberty, be discharged from that part of the
 earth, 
And the infidel come into full possession.

For, till all ceases, neither must you cease. 

I do not know what you are for, (I do not know what I am for myself, nor what anything is
 for,)

But I will search carefully for it even in being foil’d, 
In defeat, poverty, misconception, imprisonment—for they too are great. 

Revolt! and the bullet for tyrants!
Did we think victory great? 
So it is—But now it seems to me, when it cannot be help’d, that defeat is great,

And that death and dismay are great.

Loud Music

 My stepdaughter and I circle round and round.
You see, I like the music loud, the speakers
throbbing, jam-packing the room with sound whether
Bach or rock and roll, the volume cranked up so
each bass notes is like a hand smacking the gut.
But my stepdaughter disagrees. She is four
and likes the music decorous, pitched below
her own voice-that tenuous projection of self.
With music blasting, she feels she disappears,
is lost within the blare, which in fact I like.
But at four what she wants is self-location
and uses her voice as a porpoise uses 
its sonar: to find herself in all this space.
If she had a sort of box with a peephole
and looked inside, what she'd like to see would be
herself standing there in her red pants, jacket,
yellow plastic lunch box: a proper subject
for serious study. But me, if I raised
the same box to my eye, I would wish to find
the ocean on one of those days when wind
and thick cloud make the water gray and restless
as if some creature brooded underneath,
a rocky coast with a road along the shore
where someone like me was walking and has gone.
Loud music does this, it wipes out the ego,
leaving turbulent water and winding road,
a landscape stripped of people and language-
how clear the air becomes, how sharp the colors.

Eureka

 Roll up, Eureka's heroes, on that grand Old Rush afar,
For Lalor's gone to join you in the big camp where you are;
Roll up and give him welcome such as only diggers can,
For well he battled for the rights of miner and of Man.
In that bright golden country that lies beyond our sight,
The record of his honest life shall be his Miner's Right;
But many a bearded mouth shall twitch, and many a tear be shed,
And many a grey old digger sigh to hear that Lalor's dead.
Yet wipe your eyes, old fossickers, o'er worked-out fields that roam,
You need not weep at parting from a digger going home.
Now from the strange wild seasons past, the days of golden strife,
Now from the Roaring Fifties comes a scene from Lalor's life:
All gleaming white amid the shafts o'er gully, hill and flat
Again I see the tents that form the camp at Ballarat.
I hear the shovels and the picks, and all the air is rife
With the rattle of the cradles and the sounds of digger-life;
The clatter of the windlass-boles, as spinning round they go,
And then the signal to his mate, the digger's cry, "Below!"
From many a busy pointing-forge the sound of labour swells,
The tinkling of the anvils is as clear as silver bells.
I hear the broken English from the mouth of many a one
From every state and nation that is known beneath the sun;
The homely tongue of Scotland and the brogue of Ireland blend
With the dialects of England, right from Berwick to Lands End;
And to the busy concourse here the States have sent a part,
The land of gulches that has been immortalised by Harte;
The land where long from mining-camps the blue smoke upward curled;
The land that gave the "Partner" true and "Mliss" unto the world;
The men from all the nations in the New World and the Old,
All side by side, like brethren here, are delving after gold.
But suddenly the warning cries are heard on every side
As closing in around the field, a ring of troopers ride,
Unlicensed diggers are the game--their class and want are sins,
And so with all its shameful scenes, the digger hunt begins.
The men are seized who are too poor the heavy tax to pay,
Chained man to man as convicts were, and dragged in gangs away.
Though in the eyes of many a man the menace scarce was hid,
The diggers' blood was slow to boil, but scalded when it did.

But now another match is lit that soon must fire the charge
"Roll up! Roll up!" the poignant cry awakes the evening air,
And angry faces surge like waves around the speakers there.
"What are our sins that we should be an outlawed class?" they say,
"Shall we stand by while mates are seized and dragged like lags away?
Shall insult be on insult heaped? Shall we let these things go?"
And with a roar of voices comes the diggers' answer--"No!"
The day has vanished from the scene, but not the air of night
Can cool the blood that, ebbing back, leaves brows in anger white.
Lo, from the roof of Bentley's Inn the flames are leaping high;
They write "Revenge!" in letters red across the smoke-dimmed sky.
"To arms! To arms!" the cry is out; "To arms and play your part;
For every pike upon a pole will find a tyrant's heart!"
Now Lalor comes to take the lead, the spirit does not lag,
And down the rough, wild diggers kneel beneath the Diggers' Flag;
Then, rising to their feet, they swear, while rugged hearts beat high,
To stand beside their leader and to conquer or to die!
Around Eureka's stockade now the shades of night close fast,
Three hundred sleep beside their arms, and thirty sleep their last.

About the streets of Melbourne town the sound of bells is borne
That call the citizens to prayer that fateful Sabbath morn;
But there upon Eureka's hill, a hundred miles away,
The diggers' forms lie white and still above the blood-stained clay.
The bells that toll the diggers' death might also ring a knell
For those few gallant soldiers, dead, who did their duty well.
The sight of murdered heroes is to hero-hearts a goad,
A thousand men are up in arms upon the Creswick road,
And wildest rumours in the air are flying up and down,
'Tis said the men of Ballarat will march on Melbourne town.
But not in vain those diggers died. Their comrades may rejoice,
For o'er the voice of tyranny is heard the people's voice;
It says: "Reform your rotten law, the diggers' wrongs make right,
Or else with them, our brothers now, we'll gather to the fight."

'Twas of such stuff the men were made who saw our nation born,
And such as Lalor were the men who led the vanguard on;
And like such men may we be found, with leaders such as they,
In the roll-up of Australians on our darkest, grandest day!

Manteau Three

 In the fairy tale the sky
 makes of itself a coat
because it needs you
 to put it 
on. How can it do this?
 It collects its motes. It condenses its sound-
track, all the pyrric escapes, the pilgrimages
 still unconsummated, 
the turreted thoughts of sky it slightly liquefies
 and droops, the hum of the yellowest day alive,

office-holders in their books, their corridors,
 resplendent memories of royal rooms now filtered up — by smoke, by

must — it tangles up into a weave,
 tied up with votive offerings — laws, electricity — 
what the speakers let loose from their tiny eternity,
 what the empty streets held up as offering 
when only a bit of wind
 litigated in the sycamores,

oh and the flapping drafts unfinished thoughts
 raked out of air, 
and the leaves clawing their way after deep sleep set in,
 and all formations — assonant, muscular, 
chatty hurries of swarm (peoples, debris before the storm) — 
 things that grew loud when the street grew empty, 
and breaths that let themselves be breathed
 to freight a human argument, 
and sidelong glances in the midst of things, and voice — yellowest
 day alive — as it took place 
above the telegram,
 above the hand cleaving the open-air to cut its thought, 
hand flung

 towards open doorways into houses where 
den-couch and silver tray
 itch with inaction — what is there left now 
to believe — the coat? — it tangles up a good tight weave,
 windy yet sturdy, 
a coat for the ages — 
 one layer a movie of bluest blue, 
one layer the war-room mappers and their friends
 in trenches
also blue,
 one layer market-closings and one 
hydrangeas turning blue
 just as I say so,
and so on,
 so that it flows in the sky to the letter, 
you still sitting in the den below
 not knowing perhaps that now is as the fairy tale 
exactly, (as in the movie), foretold,
 had one been on the right channel, 
(although you can feel it alongside, in the house, in the food, the umbrellas,
 the bicycles), 
(even the leg muscles of this one grown quite remarkable),

 the fairy tale beginning to hover above — onscreen fangs, at the desk 
one of the older ones paying bills —
 the coat in the sky above the house not unlike celestial fabric, 
a snap of wind and plot to it, 
 are we waiting for the kinds to go to sleep? 
when is it time to go outside and look?
 I would like to place myself in the position 
of the one suddenly looking up
 to where the coat descends and presents itself, 
not like the red shoes in the other story,
 red from all we had stepped in, 
no, this the coat all warm curves and grassy specificities,
 intellectuals also there, but still indoors, 
standing up smokily to mastermind,
 theory emerging like a flowery hat, 
there, above the head,
 descending,


while outside, outside, this coat — 
 which I desire, which I, in the tale, 
desire — as it touches the dream of reason
 which I carry inevitably in my shoulders, in my very carriage, forgive me, 
begins to shred like this, as you see it do, now,
 as if I were too much in focus making the film shred, 
it growing very hot (as in giving birth) though really
 it being just evening, the movie back on the reel, 
the sky one step further down into the world but only one step,
 me trying to pull it down, onto this frame, 
for which it seems so fitting,
 for which the whole apparatus of attention had seemed to prepare us, 
and then the shredding beginning
 which sounds at first like the lovely hum 
where sun fills the day to its fringe of stillness
 but then continues, too far, too hard,
and we have to open our hands again and let it go, let it rise up
 above us,

 incomprehensible, 
clicker still in my right hand,
 the teller of the story and the shy bride, 
to whom he was showing us off a little perhaps,
 leaning back into their gossamer ripeness, 
him touching her storm, the petticoat,
 the shredded coat left mid-air, just above us, 
the coat in which the teller's plot
 entered this atmosphere, this rosy sphere of hope and lack,

this windiness of middle evening,
 so green, oh what difference could it have made 
had the teller needed to persuade her
 further — so green 
this torn hem in the first miles — or is it inches? — of our night,
 so full of hollowness, so wild with rhetoric ....

AMIN. Good day, Mirtillo. MIRT. And to you no less;

Stirs in our sheep-walk? AMIN. None, save that my
ewes,
My wethers, lambs, and wanton kids are well,
Smooth, fair, and fat; none better I can tell:
Or that this day Menalchas keeps a feast
For his sheep-shearers. MIRT. True, these are the least.
But dear Amintas, and sweet Amarillis,
Rest but a while here by this bank of lilies;
And lend a gentle ear to one report
The country has. AMIN. From whence? AMAR. From
whence? MIRT. The Court.
Three days before the shutting-in of May,
(With whitest wool be ever crown'd that day!)
To all our joy, a sweet-faced child was born,

Roger Casement

I say that Roger Casement
Did what he had to do.
He died upon the gallows,
But that is nothing new.

Afraid they might be beaten
Before the bench of Time,
They turned a trick by forgery
And blackened his good name.

A perjurer stood ready
To prove their forgery true;
They gave it out to all the world,
And that is something new;

For Spring Rice had to whisper it,
Being their Ambassador,
And then the speakers got it
And writers by the score.

Come Tom and Dick, come all the troop
That cried it far and wide,
Come from the forger and his desk,
Desert the perjurer's side;

Come speak your bit in public
That some amends be made
To this most gallant gentleman
That is in quicklime laid.

The Great Franchise Demonstration

 'Twas in the year of 1884, and on Saturday the 20th of September,
Which the inhabitants of Dundee will long remember
The great Liberal Franchise Demonstration,
Which filled their minds with admiration. 

Oh! it was a most magnificent display,
To see about 20 or 30 thousand men all in grand array;
And each man with a medal on his breast;
And every man in the procession dressed in his best. 

The banners of the processionists were really grand to see-
The like hasn't been seen for a long time in Dundee;
While sweet music from the bands did rend the skies,
And every processionist was resolved to vote for the Franchise. 

And as the procession passed along each street,
The spectators did loudly the processionists greet;
As they viewed their beautiful banners waving in the wind,
They declared such a scene would be ever fresh in their mind. 

The mustering of the processionists was very grand,
As along the Esplanade each man took his stand,
And as soon as they were marshalled in grand array,
To the Magdalen Green, in haste, they wended their way. 

And when they arrived on the Magdalen Green,
I'm sure it was a very beautiful imposing scene-
While the cheers of that vast multitude ascended to the skies,
For the "Grand Old Man," Gladstone, the Hero of the Franchise, 

Who has struggled very hard for the people's rights,
Many long years, and many weary nights;
And I think the "Grand Old Man" will gain the Franchise,
And if he does, the people will laud him to the skies. 

And his name should be written in letters of gold :
For he is a wise statesman- true and bold-
Who has advocated the people's rights for many long years;
And when he is dead they will thank him with their tears. 

For he is the man for the working man,
And without fear of contradiction, deny it who can;
Because he wishes the working man to have a good coat,
And, both in town and country, to have power to vote. 

The reason why the Lords won't pass the Franchise Bill :
They fear that it will do themselves some ill;
That is the reason why they wish to throw it out,
Yes, believe me, fellow citizens, that's the cause without doubt. 

The emblems and mottoes in the procession, were really grand,
The like hasn't been seen in broad Scotland;
Especially the picture of Gladstone- the nation's hope,
Who is a much cleverer man than Sir John Cope. 

There were masons and ploughmen all in a row,
Also tailors, tenters, and blacksmiths, which made a grand show;
Likewise carters and bakers which was most beautiful to be seen,
To see them marching from the Esplanade to the Magdalen Green. 

I'm sure it was a most beautiful sight to see,
The like has never been seen before in Dundee;
Such a body of men, and Gladstone at the helm,
Such a sight, I'm sure, 'twould the Lords o'erwhelm. 

Oh! it was grand to see that vast crowd,
And to hear the speeches, most eloquent and loud,
That were made by the speakers, regarding the Franchise;
While the spectators applauded them to the skies. 

And for the "Grand Old Man" they gave three cheers,
Hoping he would live for many long years;
And when the speeches were ended, the people's hearts were gay,
And they all dispersed quietly to their homes without delay.
