Poem
[Verse 1] They sit with friends at table nine There’s an awkward hush that stretches time She’s in that dress, pretty as can be A bridesmaid glow, a look of royalty. He smiles, then sips on his drink And I can’t help but pause and think— She looked like a princess walking in… Is he really her prince? Or just a great friend? [Pre-Chorus] I’ve chased a fire I couldn’t tame And held a heart that whispered my name So I watch them now, never to condemn— Just wondering if she chose… or if they chose him [Chorus] What if she’s chasing safety, not the fire? What if she’s walking down the aisle, not higher? What if her heart’s been trained to stay— To never ask, to not betray? What if love ain't meant to feel this tame… What if she's just too kind to name The truth? What if? [Verse 2] She asked once, “How do you really know?” I think she’s wanting me to say He's the kind of man I’d trust to stay And truth is, I like the boy just fine He works hard, and he quiets her mind But I’ve seen her light in wilder skies And think I hear the questions in her sighs [Pre-Chorus] And I’ve known peace that looked like war And quiet types you can’t ignore So I don’t claim to see it very clear— Just listening close when doubt draws near [Chorus] What if she’s chasing safety, not the fire? What if she’s walking down the aisle, not higher? What if her heart’s been taught to hide— To be the good girl, be the bride? What if there’s more than she can see But fear is dressed as loyalty? And truth… What if? [Bridge] And maybe they’re the kind that grow with time Maybe she’ll wake one day and find What I call fire, she calls peace And maybe that’s just love in a different key But still… Sometimes I wonder What if? [Final Chorus / Outro] What if she’s chasing safety, not the fire? What if she’s settling down, not reaching higher? She'll make it work, she always does— But is it passion... or just because? I don’t know— And that’s the grace in mystery Still, I wonder… What if? Summary: “What If?” is a heartfelt, acoustic-style ballad told through the eyes of an older, wiser narrator watching a young couple at a wedding. The girl—sweet, loyal, and raised to do what’s right—is beautiful in her bridesmaid dress, sitting beside a good man she’s been gently guided toward. But the narrator, having tasted true love himself, wonders: is she choosing safety… or love?
