Poem
I'd finished work at ten PM and got in my car It was dark as I drove home and, in the sky, noticed a star Could be a planet I thought, as I drove along the forest road It seemed to get closer, and I noticed my car slowed. The engine started to splutter and then ground to a halt I'd recently had it serviced so that must have caused a fault The lights on the dashboard flickered and then they went out I felt quite alone ; there was no one else about. Then the whole sky lit up and there was a brilliant light And I just sat there quite rigid, overcome with fright Suddenly I came to, I must have had a blackout But somewhere in my mind there were seeds of doubt. My head felt quite fuzzy, and I pulled over for some air And I tried to remember what had happened back there I continued my journey; I'd be home in under an hour Have hot coffee and before bed, have a cool shower. I arrived home and went inside the family were all in bed Went into the kitchen and suddenly I filled with dread I glanced up at the clock, it showed four in the morning Was I losing my mind was this episode a warning. Had coffee and a shower and then climbed into bed My wife woke up and screamed and said, " why is your back red?" She asked did I work over as I should have been home hours ago I looked at her and said honestly that I didn't know. I went dizzy and passed out, and woke up in a hospital bed The doctor in a hazmat suit shocked me when he next said You have severe radiation burns all over your back We need to know where you've been in case it's a terrorist attack. I was in hospital for two months then was given the all clear One day when I was at home two men at my door did appear They said they were from the NSA and needed to speak with me And what they were talking about sounded like fantasy. They said they'd checked my place of work for traces of radiation And that they'd found not a trace, but offered an explanation They both assured me that I wasn't losing my mind Saying it's likely that I'd had a close encounter, of the third kind. I shook my head and stared at them, in total disbelief But the fact I wasn't going mad was something of a relief My outlook on life has changed and I no longer go out at night And eventually went back to work but only in daylight. Then a few weeks later the flashbacks began I'd see a tall green reptilian creature resembling a man My doctor prescribed medication that would help me forget I've a long way to go and I haven't reached my goal yet.
