Poetry and Money???

Blog Posted:1/24/2014 6:01:00 PM
Poetry is anything that you want it to be, as we all know as poets the same words are often more than one thing, the intention of the poet is always interpreted by the reader, and at times miss-interpreted. One thing that poetry is not though, is profitable. And yet there are so many poets out there, Poetry Soup alone boasts 21000+ of us, there are also many other writing communities, poetry magazines, poetry groups, and competitions, but somehow so little publicity. A few musicians can make millions, which no doubt gives many of the others an incentive, while poets hope to make a few hundred. Musicians can influence billions of people, while poets hope to impress their friends and other community members. Why are we the poorly understood cousins? Every culture that I am aware of has its famous poets, though most are dead (Poetry Soup has been kind enough to even give us access to a number of their works), but where are poets now?

We're here, that's where! Sharing our thoughts, our poems, our lives. Excellent! Fantastic, and thanks for the good folk of Poetry Soup for giving us this haven, this place to meet. Many of our members here are very accomplished poets, having published widely, and won numerous competitions. They walk amongst us giving guidance, reassurances, and support, and for that we thank them (take a bow)

I am not a competition winner, or a widely published poet. I have been published, letting my words freely fall onto the pages of locally printed Poetry Anthologies, but my bank account has stayed dry

So what do I do? I want to make poetry bigger, to make it known, to take it to the world. I applaud the man who entered Australia's Got Talent to read poetry, but I don't have the confidence yet to make that move. So what I did was join Poetry Soup, and started a Twitter account, I even posted two poems on You tube. Through these mediums I have met many more poets than gather here in my small town. I have taken some of the poems here from Soup and tweeted links to them. Hopefully with some benefit to the poet. I have had one of my own tweeted by others, with a noticeable increase in traffic. But I am only one, and my time is often too short. So I wrote a blog many months ago, which attracted the attention of a few, most notably "Just That Archaic Poet" (many many thanks to you), and now we are two. Two who plan to make a united action with the intention to push the range of poetry. Our own and anyone else's who agrees.

Is there anyone out there who like would to join us? Please remember that at this stage a united effort is the best (I think). After all, those other scattered poetry communities, institutions and magazines, haven't really got us there yet, have they. To that end I have my fledgling Twitter account "poetscott37", and "Just That Archaic Poet" is taking on Redbubble. Would anyone have a Facebook, Tumblr, or Pinterest account, or be happy to create one? Maybe someone has a twitter account or is on Redbubble? We will need to link up in some way, but I'm sure that can't be too hard.

So come aid the poetry resurrection, and most of all, have some fun.

Cheers to you all, eagerly awaiting any input, thoughts, suggestions, help...

Poetry can be profitable if marketed correctly. Sites like Redbubble allow artists to sell their work in a variety of mediums, including greeting cards (excellent for us poets), posters, framed pictures and even T-shirts. I have an advantage in that not only do I write poetry, but I also am an optical and collage artist, in addition to being a musician and lyricist, so I have a wider range of original work for buyers to peruse. The idea is to find a few sincerely interested members to tackle different areas of social media and pool then share our followers, friends, subscribers, etc. But we are ONLY interested in people who are serious about this endeavor and have the time to help. ~Chan

Chan I must second you here, as it is important to highlight that we are hoping to gather together people who not only share our desires, but are also willing to put in the time and effort. Not to mention patience, as this is going to take some time, initially without much reward. Hence the "...have some fun." Thanks again mate.

It sure is. Scott is doing well on Twitter. I am working on getting followers for Redbubble. We are hoping other community members are especially adept in other social media platforms, such as Pinterest, tumblr, youtube, etc. and would want to join in an advantageous endeavor for us all.

Scott I wouldn't suggest beating anyone up....but my local poetry group often go to the park with lots of our poems and balloons...lots of them and then blow them up put your poem in and release them to the elements, it took a while but eventually lots of people started to ring each poet to say they found their poem and how much they liked it, we now have had a big response from the public as they turn up to see the balloons being released and they also hang around to hear some poems being recited in public...Balloons are cheap but the response is priceless..it works..try it...David

An excellent, unique, practical idea, which highlights the successes of thinking outside the square. Thanks for sharing this with us. The poetry group in this town put poems on post cards and handed them out to the public one national poetry day. Cindy -below- has given me an idea. Thanks David, don't have a twitter account by any chance do you?

Love this idea. It's unfortunate that I live in the Appalachian mountains, for I fear my balloons would wind up on a lonely mountain tops. Super creative idea, though; kudos!

Not sure what you want us to do an easy thing would to schedule poetry readings at the library say through Dept of Rec and then you could charge say $5 dollars a person to come. Also, local libraries will gladly display your verse & art.

I am a founding member of very small alternative writing group, but we are three and our forms of writing varied. We work well, and any extension to our group would disrupt what we have. I am off to a bigger town soon, partially with the hope of extending my poetic chances. In the meantime I think for best results I’ll continue to focus on-line. Thanks again for your support, and your thoughtful input.

An excellent thought, unfortunately the local poetry group already meets in the library, is free, and is ill attended. I have had a poem on their walls, but unfortunately I got more feedback for an incidental appearance on the stage of a travelling circus, I was dragged up by the mime act. This is a small town where more traditionally cultural art forms get precedence in the general public's mind, and contribute to a large tourist industry.

What you're doing is great, I say go for it, enjoy it. As you said, lol, as I've said for years, Poetry is a personal communion. We can write it any way we'd like, share it how we'd like, or it can be written and shred, written and kept in a drawer. I have a facebook account but really dislike facebook. I don't twitter and I'm apparently the only person alive under fifty who doesn't text. I don't even know HOW to text. I have an old cell phone, remember those? With buttons (oh the horror, the horror...lol Now, some time ago I had a contest... you could do this contest, too, Scott, easy as pie. The Great Poetry Release Extravaganza. I challenged people to write something, sign it and set it free. I was inspired to host this contest because I'd been walking downtown and someone had taken the time to write poetry on a brick wall IN CHALK. Yes, chalk. I stood there, long after reading it totally amazed. Like a mandala, art created for only a short time. So, my "contestants" penned verse, left their poems in restaurants, in library books, in churches and parks, in hospitals, on buses... spreading the word, poetry is alive, poetry is for all, poetry is personal, poetry can touch anyone, anywhere... and it is ours to share... great blog, well said... hope you get people interested. I just don't do tech well. I worked with technology. Hate that sucker. LOL...

We must be the anti-mobilephone collective. Mine is purely here so that when I go mountain bike riding I will have it incase of an accident, if I'm still conscious enough to ring for help. Apart from that this suggestion has given me an idea. I'll let you know if I follow it through. Otherwise my silence will no doubt be obvious.

Another excellent idea. Let me tell you, Miss Loo-Who, I am the EXACT same: I have a stone-age cell phone and I detest texting. It takes me 30 minutes to type out a message; I can call personally in that amount of time lol.
