Is Poetry a Prominent Art Form in America?

Blog Posted:8/12/2013 7:22:00 AM
My dear Soupers:

I am back. Please feel free to discuss your point of view on the subject matter below.

Is Poetry considered a Prominent Art Form in America? Or are Poets in the United States viewed as a group of emotional people? Why is this art form not given more prominence in the United States?

Thank you

You could say plays/broadway--but remakes for the most part of old themes etc.--please poets, don't feel exceptionally excluded---all art is a twisted sister except for one form---screwed up modern music!-----but what is perception?

I was trying to be nice but Ruben spoiled it---I've missed you Ruben--He's correct too but name another art that is more excepted in it's pure form by the general public-----none.

As Emily Dickinson once said: "Ups, I did it again" ... or was it Britney Spears? : D !!

......... the maximum approach to poetry comes via the exchange of futile greeting cards or meaningless song lyrics plagued with lyrical banality, tireless clichés, and puerile rhymes.

No one, ( I repeat: no one) other than "poets" themselves, really cares about poetry. Not even daily newspapers care (publish or review) poems regularly. What U.S. daily would publish poetry today? I think this is the most obvious evidence about the poetry's irrelevance to the American society. Poetry demands readers who give time to the precision of language, to the analysis of concepts/ ideas to determine their essential features and their relations ... even to the "understanding" of metaphors and images. Poetry requires a depth perception, a cultural background ... a dedicated "thinking"... If poetry is "art", I think that America is literally artless; ..........

Carol, what a great answer!! The people in the card store pondering the perfect card are reading poetry wishing they could write those thoughts themselves!! Admittedly, and true with song lyrics too these are not "deep" poems, but they are "poems". The deep poems like in any art form that works more toward the fringe attracts fewer and fewer mainstream public until all that is left is true devotees. So the bottom line, just like anything, is to know who your target audience is.

Sure. We use it in songs, Childrens books, ect... even greeting cards... The heart is always full of poetry. The pure poet who writes pure poetry for their own sake is every where... They are not noticed as much... but are there... There are poetry reading in every town... And writers groups everywhere... Caroline Kennedy sponsors Poetry collection and the Poetry Foundation recognizes it too. We need to look to see it though... Even the Library of Congress notices our efforts... The Prairie Home Companion guy has out books of poetry in numerous libraries...
