DON'T ANALYSE IT, DON'T ASK OTHERS TO ANALYSE IT
Blog Posted:4/18/2013 1:09:00 AM

Good morning Soupers!

Much had been said in line with what poetry means to us. During this International Poetry Month, I have come across many excellent articles, such as the following blog. The following excerpt echoes my sentiments exactly:

“A final suggestion about bringing poetry into your lives: don't analyze it, don't ask others to analyze it (my bold letters ~ Su). Don't deconstruct it or try to make meaning of it. Find the poems that wake you up, that make you feel as if you've submerged yourself in a mineral hot spring or an ice bath; find the poems that make you feel (almost) irrational joy or sadness or delight. Find the poems that make you want to roll around in them or paint their colors all over your bedroom ceiling. Those are the poems you want to play with -- forget the ones that don't make sense. Find those poems that communicate with the deepest parts of your being and welcome them in.”

suz, I really like this excerpt. that's what I like about Soup. Just giving "impressions" that we feel upon reading a good poem. Save analyzing for some fancy writing forum or workshop. For me, Poetry is a way for me to experience someone's emotion about something, to become educated or to make me laugh!!

hahaha, what you said about broccoli, I'll be dumping that nasty cooked veggie on the floor.

Some poems are mirrors of the souls who wrote them and I feel honoured that these thoughts are share with me. Taste differ, but if a poem has the ability to grab my attention upon the first read, I relish it. But if it fails to engage my attention, I do not pick at it like a child chasing broccoli around his dinner plate....

Well said Su, poetry is to read aloud,to yourself or to others.(that's why sites like ours are inevitably second-best in that regard)& as Rothko said about painting etc 'it is not about an experience..it is an experience'..Same with a poem as you shrewdly observe.

I have found a willing ear in my husband and it has given us the tool to express ourselves. He is an ex-soldier and had amazed friends and family alike with his penmanship - he excels in haiku. There is nothing more rewarding than the silence and the slow smile that creeps across the face of your audience when you have read aloud your latest poem. Love, Su
