Life is an infinite continuum, feeding on its own death. Our mortality, real and imagined, lives within. We can always see these truths with a discerning eye. The mirrored images that seem like two, are but one, a parallel universe whose paths cross like a wisp of wind, we are all of one time, like prose and poems written in separate centuries, but of the same struggle. There, always there, truth never hides, except for those who don’t seek it for fear of what they might find. From light to dark we fly in different directions though toward the same destination. What matters is what we do on our flight. Do we see the paths of leaves as they float on the pond, the reflection of the sky beyond, and the trees, who have now shed their leaves but will reflect full in the spring; beneath the leaves, the roots of the lily pads and the stare of a wary carp who looks from his world as we do from ours? We must find time on our journey to read, play a game, or simply sit and wonder at the marvels around us, for death will come in its own time…

I deleted my last blog because this was haunting me. I had faved some time ago a poem by our friend Bob Quigley--where are you Bob? But this poem by Bob really says it all---don't comment unless it's to Bob because he wrote it and it says all that has to be said about Memorial day.

Gold Star

I remember as a young boy, going out to play, I would sometimes see old Mr. Kimball, sitting on the steps of his porch, often reading the paper. World War II was in full swing so the newspapers and radios were avidly sought out for the latest news. Mr. Kimball was a fireman, and probably not even that old, but he seemed that way to me. Sometimes, he would invite me to sit with him and we would talk about everything and nothing. I loved spending time with him because, he was the only grown up I knew that took the time to entertain the mind of a young boy. In his front window hung a small flag. It had a red border surrounding a white field, upon which there were two blue stars. I was always curious about it, so I asked him what it was. He said “It's a Sons in Service flag. One star for each son serving. You remember my boys don't you?” I did of course. Chuck, the oldest, used to tease me, calling me a sissy to get a reaction. Bobby was a couple of years younger, and the bike I was riding once had been his. Mr. Kimball went on to explain how Chuck was now in the Army and fighting in France. Bobby was in the Navy, aboard a ship somewhere in the Pacific. He didn't say it, but I'm sure he was worried about both, communications being what they were back then. One day, when I was walking over to see him, I noticed that the flag had changed. It now carried one blue star, but the other one was gold. With the innocence that comes of being a child, I asked what the gold star meant. He quietly said “It means Chuck is coming home”, and without further comment, he turned and went in the house.
A couple of days later, I saw a hearse pull up to the Kimballs house, and four men carry a flag draped box up the porch steps. That is the moment the meaning of war came to a small boy. I knew Chuck was home. By Bob Quigley

Reminds me of the Sullivan brothers. Five sons from Iowa, who fought valiantly in WWII and gave the ultimate sacrifice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sullivan_brothers We celebrate all those who did the same. Happy Memorial Day because of them.

I certainly remember them and was the theme of the movie saving private Ryan--they took it further than the same unit or ship---if your sibling was killed--you go home.

We often need reminders what this holiday is all about. Thank you Bob Quigley for this poem, ... Memorial Day is not about barbecues and plans at the lake, the beach or someone's backyard party....we often forget what it celebrates. Thanks Craig for sharing Bob's poem.

Good thing Carrie, because here in New England (where I am) it's 45 degrees, raining, and I feel bad for those that had plans but you're correct, perhaps we'll all have more time to reflect on the real reason it's Memorial Day weekend.

I have not seen him for so long. That has happened with a number of poets. This was nice of you to show.
